At 35 years old, I was led down a path that brought me to the Bioscience Technology Program at Portland Community College (PCC) . This blog will be a chronicle of my learning experience during my final year in PCC's Bioscience Technology program.
I hope it inspires other bioscience students and is helpful to potential future employers.
I have spent more years than I care to admit in the mortgage industry as a loan processor. Clearly, it is not the industry for me. I've been quite pleased to have found an opportunity to return to school after all these years to continue my education. The very most interesting thing I've learned over the last year is how much I enjoy the sciences and particularly... lab. I love lab.
Here's why it's so remarkable:
Flashback to the year 1993, fall term my senior year in high school. My classes and extracuricular activities included concert band, jaz band, marching band, theatre and cheerleading captain. Additionally outside of school, I took dance classes twice a week and taught dance classes at the studio twice a week as well.
Nearing the end of my fall term, I realized that Biology was a hard class. Especially if you weren't studying and spending your time thinking through the homework. Being already spread very thin, and already having met the science requirements necessary to graduate, my seventeen year old self felt that my time would be better spent NOT in an advanced science class.
So I brought my mother to my school counselor's office and demanded that I be removed from that biology class so that my GPA didn't suffer because I was unable to meet all of my committments and do well in biology. I laid out an excellent case pointing to all of my activities and electives clearly evidencing the fact that my future lay in the arts. When my counselor argued that the class would be very helpful moving forward to college, I countered with the fact that I had no resources to attend college and would not have qualified for student loans because of my parent's financial appearances. Additionally, if I was able to attend college later, I would probably select a degree in the arts.
That afternoon I was transferred out of that class and felt quite relieved and victorious. (Parents, this is why you shouldn't listen to your 17 year old child, no matter how convincing they are about such things.)
And now, flash foward to the year 2011.
While taking the prerequisite classes for application into the Dental Hygiene program I realzied that I really didn't care at all about dental hygiene (other than my own) and that I was really enjoying the science classes I had to take. They were wicked interesting!
All these years later ALL I want to do is take science classes and spend time in labs. The joke is entirely on me! Would I have wasted all those years in an industry I didn't enjoy working in if I had stayed in that class and given something else up instead? I cheated myself out of ever knowing for sure. And I cheated myself out of an excellent foundation to draw from now had things turned out the way they did anyway. Ugh!
So here's to starting over and the experiences of learning something I'm passionate about! I'm happy to share this experience with the Bio-link.org community and it's a pleasure to meet you!
