The faculty and staff of Madison College, City College of San Francisco, and Delgado Community College are pleased to announce this exciting summer professional development opportunity designed for high-school and two-year college science and technical education instructors. This year Madison College, CCSF, and DCC have partnered to bring comprehensive curriculum in both human and mouse stem cell systems. The course will be taught five times, at three different locations in an effort to make it available to as many instructors as possible.
In addition, this workshop is a collaborative effort to expand the Science Teacher Technology Training (ST3) impact under Program Director, Dr. Amanda Rosenzweig (DCC). ST3 involves classroom laboratory experiences focused on General Biology curriculum aligned with NGSS. Teachers will learn and practice strategies to manage resources, students, procedures, and routines for effective delivery of science content. Participating teachers will develop instruction that supports the practice and the delivery of the content as well as cognitive and social support of the students. The goal of the ST3 is to help teachers become more comfortable with science content and the use of scientific hardware by providing training in the proper use of science equipment.
ABOUT THE ACADEMY:
The EMERGING STEM CELL TECHNOLOGIES Academy is a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded project (DUE 1501553) designed to provide hands-on experiences and instructional training necessary for teachers to incorporate stem cell technologies into their own classrooms. The Academy will be taught by a team of nationally recognized biotechnology educators led by Dr. Thomas Tubon and Dr. Robert DelVecchio.
Applications to the academy will be accepted through April 30, 2018. This workshop is limited to 12 participants; additional qualified applicants who are interested in participating may be waitlisted and will be notified as soon as possible. Waitlisted applicants will also be encouraged to attend other NSF ATE Stem Cell Academies and will be given priority consideration.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
This academy will cover:
Routine maintenance and culturing of stem cells
Mouse models of stem cell differentiation
Light and epifluorescence microscopy
PCR-based gene expression profiling for germ layer analysis
Methods for directed differentiation from pluripotent cultures
Emerging technologies including genomic editing in stem cells (CRISPR/CAS9)
3D Cell Culturing Systems for Tissue Engineering
Classroom integration of instructional materials and tips for coursework and cost sustainability
For Science Teacher Technology Training (ST3):
• Teachers will leave with a microscopy kit for their classroom (a portable microscope for each student)
• Curriculum aligned with NGSS
• Worksheet/activity examples
• 0.5 CEUs
