Event: ABRF 2020 Empowering Team Science

Community colleges play a vital role in preparing the highly skilled technical workforce needed to support the biotechnology industry. Community colleges offer students hands-on practical experience, certificates, and technical degrees. Students include high-school graduates, individuals changing careers, college graduates, and even PhD holders. As these colleges support the many facets of the biotechnology industry, their laboratories are equipped to teach modern techniques, including DNA sequencing, mass spectrometry, microscopy, chromatography, immunoassays, and bioinformatics. Many programs are also developing education skill standards and curriculum to support the latest biotechnology manufacturing that includes CRISPR-based gene therapies, CAR-T, immuno-therapeutics, and patient derived tissues. Some ... Read more

Immuno-biotechnology and Bioinformatics in Community Colleges PRESENTERS: Sandra Porter, Shoreline Community College , Todd Smith, Digital World Biology, LLC The use of new technologies such as immuno-profiling (where large numbers of immune receptors are sequenced en masse) and targeted cancer therapies (where researchers create, engineer, and grow modified T cells to attack tumors) is leading to job growth and a demand for new skills and knowledge in biomanufacturing, quality systems, immuno-bioinformatics, and cancer biology. In response to this new demand, Shoreline Community College (Shoreline, WA) has begun developing an immuno-biotechnology certificate. Part of this certificate includes a five-week course (30 ... Immuno-biotechnology is one of the fastest growing areas in the field of biotechnology. Digital World Biology’s Biotech-Careers.org database of nearly 7000 biotechnology employers has nearly 700 organizaBons that are involved with immunology in some way. With the advent of advanced DNA sequencing, and other technologies, immuno-biotechnology has significantly increased the use of compuBng technologies to decipher the meaning of large datasets and predict interacBons between immune receptors (anBbodies / T-Cell receptors / MHC) and their targets. The use of new technologies like immune-profiling - where large numbers of immune receptors are sequenced en masse - and targeted cancer therapies - ... Read more
